S.E. Hinton, or Susan Eloise Hinton, was born on July 22, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When she was only 19, she wrote The Outsiders, a story based on the people in her life. She lived in a poor home, so she had a first hand reference for writing about a family and their friends living in a poor town. She based many of the characters on people in her life such as her family, friends, and other people at her school. Though her book received a lot of criticism once it was published because it told the story of two gangs, it soon became a very famous book in America, selling over 4 million copies. Hinton used her profits to pay to go to college in Tulsa, where she meet David Inhofe, who she later married and had a son with. Since then, she has written many more books.
