The Outsiders may have bad language throughout the story, but the use of bad language is to help explain the feelings of the character. It gives emphasis on the emotion present in the different parts of the story. The amount of drug use, smoking, and drinking is used to show how some people in the story, unlike some of the main characters, aren't strong enough to live in their world without turning to drugs and alcohol. By adding this to the story, it makes it easier to the reader to compare these characters, the one that consumes drugs and alcohol, and the ones that are strong enough to live their life without it. The gang related activity in the story, shows teamwork and how their group is able to stay together through their hardest times. Lastly, the murder in the story is necessary to set up the conflict and help the story reach its climax. Without the murder, there would be no theme, and there would be no story.
